30th year anniversary!
Posted on April 30, 2024
This month we’re celebrating our 30th year of publishing! It’s been an exciting, varied and demanding but hugely rewarding journey, made possible by an incredibly talented team of colleagues who have contributed so much expertise, creativity and flair over the years – and of course by brilliant authors.
Founded in 1994 in Norwalk, Connecticut, near New York City, we began by publishing illustrated non-fiction and reference books in nature, history, arts and mind/body subjects. We relocated to Glasgow, Scotland, in 2000.
In 2011, we introduced literary fiction to our publishing, and Contraband followed in 2014 as a sister imprint.
In 2017 we moved to Media City, Salford, and began to engage with the literary world in the North of England, whilst also retaining our Scottish affiliations.
Over the last 30 years we’re proud of all our own achievements and those of our fantastic authors, but some particular highlights include:
- Winner of the Saltire Society’s inaugural Scottish Publisher of the Year award
- Booker Prize shortlistings and many other accolades for Graeme Macrae Burnet
- Cofounding (with New Writing North) and publishing the winners of the NorthBound Book Award, recognising outstanding writing talent in the North of England
- Sole publisher selected for the London 2012 Olympics Scottish cultural programme, to showcase an innovative, viral smartphone app
- Winner of Best First Book of the Year (twice) and Best Fiction of the Year at Scotland’s National Book Awards, for Chitra Ramaswamy and others
- Winner of the Paul Torday Memorial Award: Donald S Murray
- Winner of Lakeland Book Awards: Karen Lloyd (twice!)
- Shortlisted multiple times in the Independent Publishers’ Guild of the Year Awards
- Multiple shortlistings at the British Book Awards
- Shortlistings for many more of our authors in national, international and regional literary prizes
Thank you for all your support and here’s to the next 30 years!
