National Poetry Day 2024 – guest post by Rosie Hilton

Happy National Poetry Day!

This 3rd October we have an extra reason to celebrate, as we are releasing our own poetry anthology, Green Verse: Poems for our Planet, later this month. This anthology brings together long-beloved poets and new and emerging writers in a pocketful of writings that both celebrate the natural world and call for its protection.

Writing and reading poetry can be a unique way of accessing truths about ourselves and the world; we have all felt the gut punch of reading a line that sums up a feeling you thought was specific to you, or one you hadn’t ever been able to articulate yourself. Our emotions in the face of the natural world – whether they are of joy or grief – are among the most poignant we can have, and even more so in the context of the climate crisis.

I hope that everyone will find a poem in this anthology that crystallises their own thoughts in the face of ecological abundance or loss. And, as a whole, I hope this anthology will do what poetry does best: extend a hand, make you feel less alone, and perhaps even change the way you see the world around you.

Green Verse: An anthology of poems for our planet edited by Rosie Storey Hilton is publishing on the 24th October 2024.

Her 2022 poetry pamphlet, Between Solstices, was a collection of poems about building connections with each other and with the natural world.
